Story

"My dad turned me on to the blues when I was just a kid. He loved listening to the legends. My old man was a self-taught guitar picker. He even figured out how to play Dixie and Yankee Doodle at the same time just like Chet Atkins, all by ear, amazing. He was the first and biggest influence on me as a musician. I remember him playing BB King and T-Bone Walker licks and thinking, that is the special stuff. I want to to play that kind of music. I remember this one time as a kid, my dad and I watched a show on PBS TV about the blues. This interview with Gatemouth Brown had us both in a trance. We couldn't get enough. The slivers of music clips during the show were like little pieces of gold. To this day, I stop in my tracks when I hear the blues out in public. I absolutely have to know where it's coming from. That feeling that I got when I listened to the blues legends as kid still comes over me. They knew exactly what they were cookin' up. They had the recipe."

Recipe for the Blues

When I was a young boy, I heard my daddy play the blues guitar.

Asked him how he learned to cook it like that . He said you don’t have to look to far.

He pulled out a pile of vinyl records, said these folks opened my eyes

They showed me how to cook up them blues, made me realize

They got a recipe for the blues.

They got a recipe for the blues.

They got a recipe for the blues.

Yes they do.

Add a hand full of mojo,

a little pinch of Coco,

and a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

Add a hand full of mojo,

a little pinch of Coco,

and a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

They got a recipe for the blues.

Daddy said You stir in some Lightin’ Hopkins, add a little Gatemouth Brown

Mix Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters when you feel like getting’ down

Fire up a T-Bone Walker and sprinkle it with BB King

Sauce it up with John Lee Hooker, Let Coco Taylor sing

They got a recipe for the blues.

Yes they do

Allbert King cook it up true

Buddy Guy got it too

Add a hand full of mojo,

a little pinch of Coco,

and a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

Add a hand full of mojo,

a little pinch of Coco,

and a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

and a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

Yes a whole lotta boom, boom, boom.

They got a recipe for the blues.
